What If UR Wrong

“If you believe what you like in the Bible, and reject what you don’t like, it is not the Bible you believe, but yourself.”

Augustine of Hippo

Is the Bible Really the Word of God?

by Mark Karapetyan

A few months ago, my friend George, visited me at work and noticed the King James Bible sitting on my office desk. After quickly flipping through the pages, he sarcastically mocked: “You don’t take this book seriously, do you?”

“I take every book seriously” I answered.

“No, no, I mean the Bible” he clarified.

As I was fixing tea for both of us, I turned around, handed him his cup of tea, and responded: “I do actually, very much so.”

“Are you serious? You really believe that the Bible is the word of God?” he quietly ridiculed.

“Yes, I do,” I assured.

“But it was written by men, and men make mistakes; therefore, the Bible has mistakes in it,” he opined.

“I shouldn’t believe the Bible because it’s written by men?” I asked.

“Yes, of course,” he countered.

“Well then, let me ask you this” I requested. “Is every book written by men wrong?”

“No, yes, well, I guess…” he nervously hemmed and hawed.

“George, if every book written by men is wrong, then all science, medical, and academic books are also wrong because they were written by men. If not all of the books written by men are wrong, then how do you know that the Bible is wrong? What if it is one of the ‘accurate books’? Just because a book is written by men doesn’t mean it’s wrong or has mistakes in it. The dictionary or the phone book for example, were written by men, and are perfectly accurate” I grilled.

With a deer- in the headlight look on his face, George gazed at me and asked for more tea. He waited for a few moments and then asked: “But Mark, how do you know that the Bible is really the word of God? I mean, what evidence do you have? There are many so-called, ‘holy books’ like the Quran, the Vedas or the Book of Mormon; what makes the Bible different and holier?”

“Good question George, now listen carefully” I requested, and then asked: “If one day I tell you that I have a holy book and it’s from God, will you believe me?”

“I’d take you to see a psychiatrist first; of course I wouldn’t believe you,” he loudly mocked.

“But wait a second, why not?” I interrupted.

“Because you are human and I know you; I know that you cannot come up with a holy book.” He ridiculed. “Besides, you would have to somehow show me that your book is holier and different from all the other so-called holy books,” he added.

“That’s exactly the case with the Bible George; it is different than any other book that’s ever been written,” I clarified.

“How is it different?” he asked.

Then, my friend George received an urgent phone call and had to leave.

So, I will answer it here.

Why is the Bible different? Unlike any other so-called “holy book”, the Bible is unique in that it’s scientific, historical, archeological, and prophetic accuracy and continuity are unmatched among all other books. Hundreds of prophecies written thousands of years ago have been accurately fulfilled. More than a dozen scientific facts mentioned in the Bible thousands of years ago are proven to be true today. Hundreds of recent archeological findings support the historical claims in the Bible. Unlike any other book, the Bible alone addresses the four fundamental questions of life-origin, meaning, morality, and destiny, and resolves them logically and coherently.

Origin: Where did life come from? The Bible tells us that in the beginning life was created by God, not from rocks and definitely not by accident.

Meaning: What’s the purpose of life? The Bible explains that life without God becomes meaningless, and that man’s ultimate goal is to know God and make God known to others. If life is the product of an unguided, uncontrolled, meaningless, blind, “natural causes” (such as evolution), why would there be a meaning to life?

Morality: Why is there a sense of right or wrong? How do we know for example, that torturing babies for fun is wrong? Where does this standard of “wrong” come from? Since all laws come from a mind, whose mind did the moral law come from?

Destiny: The Bible assures us that life on earth is only temporary. After we die, we will either be with or without the creator.

All truth claims must be tested vigorously through a systematic methodology that’s designed to separate truth from fiction. Can you imagine a medical doctor that treats a patient without testing or diagnosing the illness first? If a medical doctor needs a systematic approach to diagnose problems, why don’t we need a similar approach to diagnose truth claims about God?

The framework for testing truth claims about God consists of three sets of tests.

1. The logical consistency and coherency test: Is the claim logical, coherent, and consistent, or is it full of contradictions and false facts? The Bible, with its 66 books has logical, consistent, coherent truth claims of a creator who created mankind and sought after them because of their fall in the Garden of Eden by sending a Messiah to one day redeem them from their sins.
One of the truth claims of Buddhism, for example, is to eliminate all desire. This proposition is contradictory and self-defeating because one must have the desire to eliminate all desire. Buddhism does not pass this test.

2. The evidence test: Is there enough evidence to support the claim? Unlike any other religious book, the Bible stands tall when it comes to supporting evidence to validate its claims. The Quran, for example, claims that the Bible has been corrupted, but does not give any evidence for this claim. When Muslims are asked to provide a single piece of evidence for what they believe, they expect you to just take their word for it because Mohammad said so. Will they similarly accept the claim that Jesus is God just because Jesus said so?

3. The relevancy test: Is the claim relevant to the world that we live in? Does the claim deal with issues such as the sinful nature of man or the problem of pain and suffering?
Pantheists, for example, claim that pain is an illusion and that there is no suffering. I wonder if they feel this way when they spill hot tea on themselves!

I know it is hard for people to believe that only one book can be divine and true while the others can’t; People don’t believe in absolute truths anymore. They believe that truth is relative and that truth is what you make of it. People base truth on their feelings and experiences, rather than facts and evidence. Just because something feels good and amazing doesn’t mean it is right…ask drug addicts!

Examine all the other religions, read their books, and see for yourself if they can answer the four fundamental questions of life or pass the three truth tests. I guarantee you, they will fail spectacularly.

The Bible is unique in so many ways because it is the true word of God and free of errors. It is a divine book that has changed the lives of billions of people around the world. A criminal, a rapist, a mother,, a farmer, a king, a child or a scientist, all read the Bible and find that their lives are transformed greatly.

Voltaire once said that “another century and there will not be a Bible left on earth.” It is fascinating to me that Voltaire is long dead and gone yet the Bible is still alive and changing the lives of millions. God sometimes has a sense of humor. Today, Voltaire’s house in Geneva is a printing shop and a bookstore that sells only Bibles!

“A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.” These were the words of Charles Spurgeon. Read it again and ask yourself: “Are you falling apart, or is your Bible?”

“The Bible is very easy to understand, but we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand, we are obliged to act accordingly.”

Søren Kierkegaard
